I don't have any fax software yet my phone goes to the fax

by CandiApple / August 9, 2008 11:26 PM PDT

I have my FIOS modem hooked up to the desktop. When the phone rings on the 4th ring it sounds like its going to a fax. I don't have a fax machine. I unplugged the answering machine but it does the same thing. The only time it rings more than 4x is when the FIOS is not hooked up to the computer.

I'm not sure which forum I should be in. I called FIOS, Dell, V-Tech (answering machine) and none can help. They insist I have some type of fax software installed - I do not.

Where is the sound coming from??
by Steven Haninger / August 9, 2008 11:46 PM PDT

If it's coming from inside your computer, it sounds as if you have a modem device set to "auto-answer". This doesn't have to mean it's a fax. The sound might be that of rising/falling tones and white noise that occurs during the connection negotiating process. Look for modem in device manager. There would be several ways to deal with this. If you don't have a telephone device connected to the PC, you can disable the modem. If you do, you should be able to disable the auto-answer function.

Forgot to add....had to look it up

If you find that a modem device is installed and can look at setup, settings, etc., you should find a place to add additional commands. The one to disable auto-answer should be "ATSO=0" without quotes and the last entry is a zero and not the letter O.

(NT) I disabled both and it still goes to that fax sound.

But where is the sound coming from??
by Steven Haninger / August 10, 2008 9:54 AM PDT

Is it coming from inside your computer? Does it get louder if you take the side cover off. If you have fiber optic service, it doesn't come through a phone jack to your PC because it will be using and Ethernet cable. Is there a phone cord plugged into the PC as well? With no cord plugged in, I can't see how a modem could be triggered to begin the negotiation process. And you said both modems. Does your PC have two of them? Something's not sounding right here.

The phone is not plugged into the computer directly

I have my internet and phone with Verizon FIOS. The ethernet cord is connected to the FIOS router. The phone is connected to the phone jack in the wall.

Maybe I'm not being clear

Where is the sound coming from...or... Is it definitely coming from inside your computer? If the answer is "Yes, it's coming from inside the computer", do you have a telephone modem inside your computer? You say it's a fax noise. Do you know what two modems sound like when they negotiate speed and features? Is it the same noise?

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
