I could never figure out

why some people, when they mock someone, are excoriated by member of the public and the press while others who do the same are applauded and expect to be paid for it.

Some are overpaid. Internet always collects late-night comments on Trump, gives 'em one-click access the next day. I didn't see all, but Seth Meyers had one that was as full of shallow mockery, half-truths and outright lies as ... oh, say a Presidential tweet.
