i cant type in an administrator password

Nov 21, 2008 6:03AM PST

i recently added a user account and turned on parental controls. somehow in the mix both of my accounts switched to standard accounts. when i am prompted for an administrator password the box pops up and there is nowhere to type in anything and the "OK" button is not able to be clicked. i cant do anything because there is no way to make an account or modify the accounts without an administrator password. and now there isnt any admistrator account at all. i have no way to modify anything. help please its vista home basic.

If You're Saying You Can't Login To The Computer At All...
Aug 23, 2010 3:38AM PDT

...and IF you've never enabled the hidden "administrator" login for the computer, then you'll need to reinstall the operating system.. On the other hand, if you have enabled the hidden administrator login previously, then try switching users, type in "administrator" as the username, then leave the password line blank, assuming you didn't create a password for it. Once logged in as the "administrator", you should be able to correct the parental control stuff.

As just an outside chance, there is an NTPassword bootdisc option which "might" allow you to access the password, but I don't think that's the situation here.. I'll guess you know the password, you've just locked your current user out because of parental controls. It's still might be worth a try.

Hope this helps.

still locked out

Yep I've never hidden the "administrator", and this computer was a gift, so i never received any disc to reinstall the computers operating system. I looked at the link you provided and it seems that i have a newer opeating system "If used on users that have EFS encrypted files, and the system is XP or newer, all encrypted files for that user will be UNREADABLE! and cannot be recovered unless you remember the old password again If you don't know if you have encrypted files or not, you most likely don't have them. (except maybe on corporate systems) ". I AM S.O.L.

thank you for trying with me

Is The Computer A Brand Name Machine?

Most companies like HP, Compaq, and others should be able to provide you with the Recovery Discs at a small fee.. The Recovery Discs contain the operating system, all drivers, and all software as it was installed at the factory.. Check their website or give them a call..

Unfortunately, you've not given us any of that information so we can't be of much assistance.

Hope this helps.

As To The Encrypted Files Thing...
Aug 23, 2010 5:53AM PDT

If you have never encrypted them your self, then they probably aren't encrypted.. Try the NTPassword option. It might allow you to gain access to the computer. It's your choice.

Hope this helps.
