I cannot use System Restore!

May 29, 2007 1:16PM PDT

I tried to use a System Restore, and after my PC rebooted, it came up with a screen that says "Your computer cannot be restored to May 28, 2007. No changes were made to your computer"

which isn't true because I installed a game and an update. The reason I want to restore is because the game is causing some problems. Anyway is there any reason why I can't use system restore? Is this spyware or something?

thanks!

Any Reason why

You dont just use Add/Remove Programs instead. Not being smart here but if you are having a problem with the game, it would seam to be the more logical choice.

Stupid?:Could Message Mean No Point Created on 28th?

Try a further back date? Like I said stupid...another one: Is it possible your system has not been creating "auto" points?
I found if you're running an "always on" monitoring program, (say AV?AS guard or in my case a perpetual back-up system) sys restore is unable to create auto points until the monitoring is manually disabled temporarily. Good Luck! Happy

Norton updates prevent system restore !
May 31, 2007 10:08PM PDT

I found with my last PC and with my new PC that any restore point I try will not work if norton updated your virus definitions inbetween the restore point you pick and the current date ,if one was to go thru ,then you would recieve a Norton error notice that virus definitions cannot be located ,or something along those lines ,I cannot believe that Norton has yet corrected this bug with its anti-virus app.? I do not leave my Norton set to automatic updating and instead I update it manually and creat a restore point after each update !

I know you already have this solved, but...

I do not have Norton on my system, and I have gotten the same error message, and yes, when I WAS using a checkpoint that was created on that particular date. I have found that if you make too many installations in a certain time period, that would cause it. I.e. one time was the first time I used Windows Updates and I had over 120 updates. Each one of those updates is treated like a separate installation. Then when I needed to use System Restore, it erased all of the previous program installations and the ones that did exist, which were for the Windows Updates, did not work.

To solve this problem, I have found that every once in awhile, when you haven't made any new installations for awhile, so you know you're not going to need to go back, turn off System Restore and turn it back on. This will clear it and begin fresh with a new checkpoint that WILL work when you need it.

Keep in mind that some antivirus suites block SR.

That's one of the better known "what were they thinking?" issues. There are a lot more.

To get going I suggest you review the above then tell more.
