Question

I cannot run chkdsk or use the disk defrag.

Sep 27, 2011 4:23AM PDT

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">When I try to run disk defragmenter a window comes up and says, 'Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume (C). Please run Chkdsk/f. I run Chkdsk/f from the run window the pop up window says, Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? Y/N I type Y and restart the computer. Upon restart I get the blue screen error mussage stating that: One of your disk needs to be checked for consistecy. It is strongly recommend that you check your disk.

Disk checking has been cancelled.

I have been reading forums and trying all sorts of things, nothing seems to be working.

This has some rather long discussions.

But let's start with SAFETY FIRST.

Be sure you have nothing you can't lose on this drive BEFORE attempting of the repairs you read about in the many other discussions.

I feel I'm pretty safe. If I'm not sure what a program or it's function is I google. If I still don't get it, I tend to leave it be...figuring it's part of the Operating System. I'm learning as I go.
I've also discovered that my screen saver never comes on. Not sure if the two are connected, but hopefully I'll soon find out.

PS. If the safe mode fails.

We usually find a pest, trojan or other infection. After the 3 steps, scan with Grif's advice at

OK, that's a good clue.

Now that we are safe we can look at the following.

SCHEDULE THIS FOR -> WHEN YOU HAVE TIME.

1. Unplug any "extra" USB things. Printers, drives, etc.
2. Reboot and let it try again.

Fail?

3. Boot SAFE MODE (see google if you forgot) and let it try again.

This will take a very long time so set aside the hour or two slot.

safe mode

Ok I ran the rkill and both scans. There were a few adware tracking cookies. you were right it took a few hours. I still cannot defrag or analyze the c drive.
I'm a little confused on what exactly you recommend I do in the safe mode as I get the same results as in a regular reboot. Try what again??
The blue screen message is still telling me that the disk checking is recommended and has been canceled.

A boot to safe mode and in safe mode try the disk checking.

I just wanted to say Thank you for all your help. I did learn a lot more about my computer. In the end I got frustrated and passed it along to a computer guy who is a friend of my husband. He fixed it and is currently adding more memory to speed it up a bit. Once I find out what, exactly, he did I will share with you. Just in case there are any others you are helping in the same boat I was. Happy
Thanks again.
