I canNOT get my Dell laptop(s) to come out of sleep mode.

Jul 4, 2009 1:04PM PDT

I have most currently a Dell Inspiron 1420. I am running Vista Ultimate. I have the power settings to "do nothing" when I close the lid, but the laptop almost immediately goes into sleep mode.
Nothing I do will get it to come out of sleep mode. (ie: touchpad mouse or hitting any keys) I have to hold the power button until it powers down then restart it.
I have an Inspiron 600M running XP Professional and it does the same thing, so to me it seems to be a Dell issue. I have tried a variety of power settings, none of which work.
I often have to close the lid but do not want the computer to go into sleep mode. (It stays attached to a GPS receiver which as a truck driver I use often.)
Can anyone give me some insight?

did you try just clicking the power button once
or that little button above the volume buttons?

Power button for getting out of sleep mode.

When I briefly press the power button, the system shuts down. (That is how I have it set in the power settings.) I have changed those settings, then pressed the power button, but nothing happens. Any other ideas?

I remember that complaint.

I've heard and read the complaints about the lid switch issue. The only true fix is to get a technician to unplug or disable the lid switch.

Sorry, I've heard this one far too many times. Yes there should be a software fix, patch or such but after so many posts and conversations my answer is this. Fix it with a nice technician.

Lid Switch

Ha ha. I have to laugh because I accidentally broke the lid switch on my 600M. So yes, I suppose I could do the same thing with my 1420, just take the little switch out.
Thanks for the input anyway!
