I can't see some pictures in my emails,

My problem is that when I receive some emails that have pictures in them I can't always see them. I have to click on forward email then the pictures will show but not always. I have tried changing the settings but nothing seems to work. My system runs Windows 7 home premium and I use both Internet explorer 9 or Mozilla Firefox. My email is through Windows Live/MSN Hotmail.
I get the same results with both IE9 and Firefox.

It is a minefield

and is not always your fault. Meaning, it depends how the sender sends them to you.

I gave up trying to figure this out and if I wanted to see them I would message back to the sender to send them as attached, and not within the email.
