The usual. It's not partitioned and formatted.

New drives are that way.

Tell how you formatted and partitioned it in the Drive/Disk management tool of XP.

I cannot Partition and Format new USB drive
Mar 12, 2005 8:04AM PST

My laptop, Dell, D600,running Windows XP-pro, has no problem with speed and memory. I used menue Disk Management, after a double click to it, an automatic wizard popped up to Initialize and convert the Drive, then Windows popped an ERROR message. As a result, the Drive never been INITIALIZED and/or CONVERTED. The Drive was then covered with a small RED STOP SIGHT, I CANNOT RIGHT CLICK TO DRIVE TO FORMAT IT (because IT WAS NOT INITIALIZED. I tried the same procedure with another computer running XP-Home Ed., but without luck. Same problem. Please advise.

You can't format a drive that has no partition.
