I can't get past the startup password on my laptop

by brinicole92 / April 11, 2011 9:06 AM PDT

I need help getting past the windows 7 startup password on my laptop. It wasn't there before, but this morning I tried getting on and it won't let me enter safe mode or the boot menu. It's a black screen with a blue rectange that says "enter current password" I have tried doing the ctrl alt delete thing and F2, F8 and F12.. But nothing works! Help!

Is this a WINDOWS password?

You can use NTPASSWD to reset the admin password or try booting SAFE MODE (widely documented) and trying the administrator account to change your password.

I have tried that.. Won't let me do anything. Not safe mode.. NOTHING! I'm getting extremely aggravated here. lol

Usually NTPASSWD does a nice job. I fear you may need to use next.

-> I'm sorry but I have been lax in repeating the advice about having a spare admin account.

Do you have any other accounts you can use?

I don't think you understand.. It's not an administrative password that I need. The first thing it goes to is this black screen with a blue enter password rectangle. Because I do have a spare account. I can't even get that far for it to show me the log in for the accounts.

That's why my first question was about Windows.

Sorry that we got off to the wrong direction but I did ask.

-> Now that it's a BIOS PASSWORD we need the make and model of the machine.

DON'T PANIC. That password can be reset. Sometimes it's a factory only job but they can be reset.

Toshiba can unblock it. Last time it was 75 bucks. I hear it can be from 50 to 75 bucks.

Your issue

Hi there I was wondering if you were ever able to solve your start up issue? I am asking because I am now having the same issue, and I have tried everything and every key, I can't even get it to boot from the recovery CDs that I have. So hopefully you were able to get some progress and could share...

Thanks, David

If so, we see that the maker has to unlock it.

We covered both Windows and BIOS passwords.

I can't guess which problem you are trying to solve. Or if you like others think that a BIOS password is resettable without the trip to the repair depot.

What good would such a password be if it was easy to reset?

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
