I Can't Download nor Upgrade!! Is it a Virus?

by eyemid / November 15, 2004 1:26 AM PST

Ok here is my story. For a month now everytime i try to upgrade NortonAntivirus via Live update they tell me that my antivirus is uptodate. So i thought i was fine.

I started feeling fishy when i tried to download SP2. I tried to download it via Windows Update all i managed to get is the list of updates but couldn't install any (i always got the msg: Failed to install...). Then i went and downloaded the stand alone file fro SP2 but it was very slow, so i cancelled it and waited until i had better connection. Then when i tried to re-download it continued from the previously reached progress. So i thought that was cool. Then when it reached 82.5 MB it told me that the file was done!!! it was weird cuz the file is 277 MB!!!

Today i tried to Download DivX and the same problem as before happened (the continue download problem)...

Please help!!! are those symptoms of a virus? a known one? what can i do. any suggestions? I need to download SP2 and the virus updates. HELP!!!

Thank you for your time and help,

PS: I'm using Windows XP Pro.

Make sure that your system is spyware-free before installing SP2 because it can interfere with SP2 installation. Scan your system using Ad-aware and Spybot S&D:

Ad-aware SE - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Spybot-Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=mirrors

Update the programs prior running a scan.
Reboot after using the programs.

Next, download CWShredder from http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
After installing it, run CWShredder.exe and let if fix what it finds.

Reboot when done.

Confirm your work by running an online scan using Housecall - http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

If all clean, try to install again or see this page --> http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

BTW, you can order Free XP SP2 CD from http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/cd/confirm.aspx

Hey donna

Well itried to download the files you mentioned here is the unsuccesful process:

- Download complete.
- After running (Ad-ware se personal 1.05) i get the following msg:

could not initialize installation. File Size expected=2636408, size returned=322147
[ ok ]

This takes us back to the initial problem were i can't
install nor Download.

Any suggestions?

You might want to check your System Files are not corrupted:

Run System File Checker -
Start>Run then type CMD
Hit Enter

It will ask for your XP CD to proceed with the file checking.

Is it a pirated copy?
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / November 15, 2004 2:10 AM PST

Your post in the XP forum dropped dead after we found out about the version of the OS you have. Also your comment that all software in your area sold is pirated doesn't help.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
