Question

I can't change picture size with Netflix app in Smart Hub

May 16, 2014 4:30AM PDT

Hi there,
I just bought a "Samsung 55" 1080p 120Hz LED Smart TV (UN55F6300AFXZC)". When using the Netflix app in the Smart Hub the TV does not allow me to change the picture size; which I am getting with black strips at top and bottom. In the menu picture options you can change the picture size but only when watching TV channels (when looking for option while playing Netflix the option appears disabled).
I contacted Samsung chat support and they say the picture size can only be adjusted when watching TV channels, Blue-ray, or DVD movies but they say it is not possible to change it with Smart Hub apps.
As I just bought the TV I said I would consider changing of TV model if there is one which this option works; but the technician says all the Samsung TV have the same issue.
I am used to play Netflix in another (No smart) TV via PS3 and I have no problem.
Any suggestions? now is a good time for me to change of mind and buy a different TV if required.

True.

When the input is from HDMI there is more control. Here's a nugget worth knowing. When the app launches said app is now in control. So back to Netflix to ask for this feature. And I agree with the tech on this one.

Was it smart buy Smart just because of Netflix app???

Thanks for your help. I am beginning to think I wasn't too smart when I bought Smart mainly for this Netflix feature.
I just don't know if I should keep it or return; I might go better buying a standard, cheaper, and play Netflix through my PS3.
Also concerns me that in the Samsung guide says that using the TV for extended periods of time with the black strips at top and bottom or the black box (4:3) can cause damage to the screen.

About "damage"

All makers write such now to skirt claims later. I've seen IR (image retention) even on LED/LCD panels but these were on information kiosks that ran for a few years. Home users tend to be a picky lot and I've had folk point and shout "See, see!" as they were 2 inches from the LCD surface. When I was many feet away I couldn't see it. I don't watch TV from 6 inches away.

My choice was the Kindle Fire TV for under 99 bucks. It's small and for me more current than what makers are offering. This maker also tends to have PIA (read http://www.samsungadhub.com/pr/ourCapability/smartTVAd.do ) and how they mandate the sets check in with the mothership before allowing use of the apps is troubling. WHY? Because when Samsung's services are not reachable all the apps drop dead. To me these 2 reasons are the primary reasons I turn Smart Hub off. The last reason is that this check in with the mothership sets off my alarm bells on privacy. What data is Sam collecting?

The above was about size, bars but nothing about goes to green.

CALL THIS ONE IN TO SAMSUNG.

They'll check that your firmware is current, try resets and if failed, arrange for repair.
