I can't believe it's been 17 years!

Mar 12, 2004 7:25AM PST

We had 2 huskey dogs 17 years ago. Right before the swarms appeared, those dogs dug up half the yard. We figured they heard the locust young'ns getting ready to come to the surface.

Once you've heard them, you'll never forget.

"Once it comes it's like being attacked by a horde. You can't escape it," said entomologist Dr. Frank Hale.

The horde is the onslaught of cicadas. Not the every-year variety - those big black ones that come to life just once in a great while. And when they do, they're everywhere.

I recall we used to look at their wings to see if there was a "W" there, indicating there would soon be a war.

Hi Angeline,

We had them last summer in NC, although I don't know if they were the 11 or 17 year variety. They sure were loud! They are sorta pretty, all black and bright orange, but they are big ol things. And did I mention they are sure loud?? Wink

This page has tons of info including sound files (try to ignore the background).

Wow, Looks like a real buggy year down there in TN. I remember years ago something like that out in N. Adams, Mass. Maybe if Willie's in town he can help out with that old Guitar he plays. Tommy Chong might be better. I imagine its not a joking matter tho, for those that have to put up with the Bugs.
