General discussion

I can't believe how worthless the filters...

Feb 15, 2006 8:03AM PST

are in Thunderbird 1.5.

I had them set to allow only messages that are from addresses in my address book. Then I send myself an email using an address that is not in my address book and it goes through anyway!

I even set the junk mail setting to not allow addresses that are not in my address book and it still lets them through!

Absolutely worthless!

Seems fine to me. About that bug. Did you report it?

I went about the process a different way...

No, I didn't report it because maybe it isn't supposed to work the way I was trying to make it work.

I was thinking I could select options to have the program receive only those messages from addresses that are already in my address book which didn't work. I made the program work satisfactorily by selecting options for it to [not] allow messages from addresses that are not in my address book.

Six of one, half dozen of the other....but it works.

Popfile? Is that a seperate program and stable?

About 99.99% stable.

I think I have to restart it once in awhile but it works fine.

If a feature does not work in Mozilla land, and no one reports it as broken then it does not get fixed. If it's a misunderstanding of how it works, you may have to visit the Mozilla wiki or document pages to see if you can find the explanation.

My note is to share what I use and to note there is a process to report bugs.

Bug reports
Feb 21, 2006 1:39PM PST

Sure, you can report them. But look at the mile long list of problems reported and no fixes given. Just messages that if anyone is working on, to update their fix. I have not had working email since their last upgrade. I have had to go back to Outlook and can't import messages. Tried all their "fixes" for doing so and none worked. Even trying to access old saved messages causes computer to freeze up. Please see my post under computer help with longer detailed explaination of problems. No one has replied with help, other than to say look at Mozilla support pages. I had looked there prior to posting to the group here at CNET and there was nothing that remotely came close to the problems I am experiencing, so no help there.

Something truly odd here.

Maybe it's the definition, but "working email" means the messages arrive and are sent. If that has failed, I can write that's it not a known bug since the latest Mozilla email softwares do work quite well (as of last weeks version) at the office.

If it has failed, there are no clues in your post to begin figuring out why your email is not arriving or sending.

Sorry to hear your woes.

Have you looked at the Junk mail filter log?
Feb 22, 2006 6:22AM PST

Thunderbird has a log you can keep to record all Junk mail filtering. I've never kept mine as I don't have any problems, but if you do, it may show why some emails keep getting through.

I accomplished what I needed in an opposite way...
Feb 22, 2006 7:07AM PST

Instead of receiving only mail from addresses in my address book I opted to not receive mail from addresses that are not in my address book.

It's a "6 of one and a half dozen of the other" kind of thing.
