I can only connect to WPA encrypted wireless networks...why?

by juice185 / September 16, 2008 2:35 PM PDT

Everytime i connect to a WPA encrypted network, the password screen prompt comes up, i enter the password and there is no problem with connecting.

However, every time i try to connect to a wireless network that has any other sort of encryption...the password prompt is skipped entirely and after the computer trys to connect for a few futile moments, the connection attempt fails. What's the deal?

Im using XP professional 2003. It is actually my neighbors network and he is letting me bum wireless off of him. Also, there are a few other people using the network. Some have xp and others have vista. None of them are having an issue connecting.

But I may have discovered why that happened by shear luck. It had to do with a very old and rare network card. In XP (all versions) a driver error caused it to do that. We never bothered to find a fix but changed out the card and it works fine now.
