Given the number of cards I encountered over the years with BAD CAPS (google that) I don't think much of such events. Besides an USB WiFi dongle like http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY/ is under 10 bucks here so we responsibly recycle the burnt board and replace it.

Well lets start of:
I have been building pcs for 4 years now, and have never experienced this before. I took an old wifi card from a Medion computer into my secondary computer (I3 3220, Asrock H61M-GS 2GB ram CX500) and it worked ok (5 min). For the record this is not a PCI(E) Wireless Network card, but a card that needs a wire to the USB hub on the Motherboard. So when I took the pc and placed it next to my tv and installed it again (including the whole process of installing the wifi card, because it was needed somewhere else again) it didn't show up on boot. Then I heard a "pang"
and there was an awfull smell. I knew I blew up the WIFI card. as stupid as I feel, I would like to know what can cause these problems, so it won't happen again.
Thank you in advance,
