I am a 68 YO with novice experience. I have Windows 7, and unfortunately use YAHOO. I download from my dvd to computer disc (C), but cannot open or transfer the files from Downloads afterwards. I cannot attach the files to e-mail or f/b.

Please give step by step details of what you're doing and...

...what messages you're getting. There should be no reason this can't be made to work. Of course if you're trying to open files made by some program you haven't reinstalled, that's one possibility. However without knowing the details, we can't say whether that's what you're running into or not.

Re: files from DVd

- "Download" is an uncommon term for what you did. Download is only used for copying something that is on Internet. Can you tell what you did and how you did it?
- What is the file extension (like .mp3 or .avi) of the file(s) you 'downloaded' from the DVD and how big (size in MB) are they?
- What happens if you try attach those file(s) to an e-mail? What e-mail program?
- What do you mean with "attaching a file to facebook"?

I forgot three questions:
- What program(s) did you use to open the files with? And how? By double click in Windows Explorer, by right click and open with, or by running the program and using something like File>Open or whatever is the usual way for it to open a file from the hard disk?
- If "downloading" just means "copying to the hard disk" and not "converting to another file type", can you open the same file(s) directly from the DVD?
- What kind of DVD, for example: a Windows install DVD, a retail DVD from some movie, a DVD to which you backed up the pictures from your iPhone?

Transferring files from dvd to computer.
May 12, 2015 1:26PM PDT

I may be over my head. Let me describe my actions.
About 20+ years ago, I transferred 8mm family films to VHS. About 10 years ago, I transferred the VHS to DVD, using a $700 (in 2005) Sony dual dubbing machine and store bought discs. I have since made my family hundreds of DVD copies using NERO 9, off the computer.

However I am unable to bring up anything but the whole video, not in chapters.

I was wanting to take small snippets of the DVDs and post on F/B, or add as attachments to e-mails.

I inserted the DVD into my computer, and I clicked on "Open files for viewing. " Now when I click on "computer" and go to devices with Removable Storage: It shows up:
DVD RW Drive (D)
SONATA_VOLUME
4.38 GB
If I double left click it plays the entire video. If I single right click and click on play, it plays. If I single right click and click on open, it goes to a
Computer DVD RW (DHappy SONATA_VOLUME
NAME
Files currently on the DISC (1)
VIDEO_TS 1/1/2004
Obviously I am unable to comprehend most of this. I am more a point and click type.

So nothing wrong.

You have a long video file on a DVD.. You can't mail that or post it to facebook. You can only play it.

So the first thing you need is a video editor to open it for editing, cut a small part out of it and save that to your hard disk in some form (say, as an .avi-file). I used Virtualdub (free) for that, but there are a lot of other free or paid programs that might work for you. it might be a rather steep leauning path for you.

A bit more clarification might help. You are downloading what from where and sending it to? You said to downloads and once in downloads do the items open? Is it data, music, photos? Again a bit more information might help.
