I am stuck in "what is your computer's name?"

Mar 21, 2008 11:37PM PDT

I just ran a recovery disk on my pc. When I reboot it I am required to complete the initial Windows XP setup. The problem is when I get to ?What?s your computer?s name?? I enter it, click next and nothing happens for a long time. So I decided to let it over night to see if it just need more time. Nothing! I replaced the hard drive presuming that the original HDD was damaged but got stuck in the same spot. Could my recovery disks be bad? I think I have done this procedure once a while back and it worked fine.
Any idea as to what is going on?

Wild guess.

Your machine has something like USB devices plugged in and the XP install can't deal with this until later. Try unplugging USB printers, web cams, etc.

Sad The only USB I had connected was my mouse. I replaced it by a PS/2 but did not work. Thanks anyway...

Oh...my goodness!! It did work. Thanks Bob, you're great!!

Sorry for the wild guess but it's a common issue and one I run into about 1/2 the time.

And take a bow for applying what some may have passed up as "it can't be that!"

- What exactly is a "stock" (and a "non-stock") keyboard and mouse? "Stock" is a rather uncommon term for "PS/2".
- Tried it without mouse (use tab key to tab through the fields and buttons)?
- Is this a PC that came with XP originally? Where did the recovery disks come from?
