hyperdrive

May 22, 2005 7:20AM PDT

I downloaded a lot of info on a hyperdrive and then used the recover disc on my computer. I am now unable to access the hyperdrive. I need to install updated driver which i don't know how to do. I keep getting messages to insert ME disc which was never supplied. Help!

This post has so little information.

I could comment, but must wait till all the details are filled in.

Best of luck,

Sorry!

Never used this website before, and really haven't a clue what i'm doing! What information should i be putting in?

Try...

"Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. "

The make/model of the host machine. What a hyperdrive is (I'd rather not guess it's an USB memory key.) And more.

Details about the restore CD would be nice. If the OS is asking for a CD, usually you show it the Restore CD. And for USB issues, http://www.usbman.com has some information.

Sorry, but details are so light in your post that nothing but generic replies for now.

I'll try to find out info you suggested.

Just asking.

Why wouldn't you know these thing?

That is, what is the hyperdrive?

It matters because as the owner of the device and machine, this will help me pick what level of responses to give.

More info.
May 23, 2005 7:56AM PDT

Well, this may surprise you but although i use my pc very frequently, i have absolutely no idea what the 'system info' is. As for the 'hyperdrive' someone gave it to me and with the instructions 'use like a disc, except it has more memory'. I wouldn't know to call it a usb pen drive! Sorry but that completes my knowledge, which is why I'm struggling! Anyway this will not beat me! I have found out the following about my computer.
Packard Bell NEC X86-based pc
Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 1300MHz Genuine Intel - 1285 Mhz Microsoft Windows ME 4.90.3000 127.OMB RAM.
I have a Packard Bell Recovery Disk, no CD's.
I hope this means more to you than to me. I'm even more desperate now as i now realise I can't download photos from my digital camera to my pc. Same messages, same problem.
Thanks for helping!

Ouch, no CD.
May 23, 2005 8:09AM PDT

That can make repairs very difficult. In fact, nearly impossible if a file is needed for the OS.

But try this -> http://www.usbman.com/Troubleshooter%20General.htm

It may sound like Greek at first, but it an accepted method.

Can I ask what is the plan if the OS fails? Without the CD, how do you fix this?

Robert, she DID say that she had

the recovery CD. Did you miss that or am I mssing something?

- Collapse -
I missed that. That's much better.
May 23, 2005 10:05AM PDT

Sorry, I read right past it to the "no cd" passage.

- Collapse -
Now i'm worried.
May 23, 2005 8:40AM PDT

If you think this is a problem, then i'm in big trouble!

The extent of my 'fixing' up to now - when things have got really desperate - has been putting the recovery disc in to wipe everything off, then it puts it all back on and away i go.

I'll have a go at the Greek and see what happens.
Thanks again.

Not usurping Robert
May 23, 2005 8:31AM PDT

If the Hyperdrive is what many, and Robert, call a Key chain drive, or if it is one of the emory stick type things. They are a stick of memory in a little package that you plug into a USB port. If you have the drivers for it on the computer, it will be seen in Windows Exploere [not IE] as a removeable drive.

Win XP comes with the drivers, but for Win 9x and Win ME you must install drivers for the device.

If it came with a driver floppy or CD just install the drivers. If not, then let us know the name of the mfr of the device. Normally you can then download the drivers from their website.

Very likely it is a USB device, if it is a Fire Wire device, IEEE1394, it is possible that your PC does not have a plug for it.

Re-Reading, your post. Did it work once??? If so and then when you used the recovery CD it went south, you probably only need to reinstall the hyperdrive drivers from the hyperdrive info you downloaded. It wouldn't be on the ME restore CD unless it came with the computer.

seems to be a memory stick.........
May 24, 2005 5:56AM PDT

I think i have a memory stick - it plugs into a USB port. I never installed anything to use it and I wasn't given anything with it, just plugged it in and had no trouble downloading on to it. I'm afraid the only thing i know about it is that it says 'HyperDrive 256m' on it.

The pen drive stopped working after using the recovery disc.
My digital camera programme has also stopped working since using the recovery disc. I've tried reloading from the disc but now get the same error messages as with the pendrive. I hope this makes some sense!!

This may be a stupid question but if i sort the pendrive out is it likely to sort the camera out as well? Otherwise do you think i should use the recovery disc again? (oh no, probably not!)

I await some advice, and am eternally grateful that other people know more about computers than me!

One problem with USB devices is that the
May 24, 2005 6:07AM PDT

order of installation of things is critical.

Very likely you had to install the drivers before connecting anything related to the USB ports.

You may have to "remove" the devices, both physically and driverwise and start over. [by start over, I'm only talking with regard to the camera related stuff.] You may have this problem anytime that you use the restore disk.

Probably best to go up in Safe Mode to remove things. Safe Mode is the only way to see if somehow more than one instance of device or driver is installed. You must remove them ALL, before rebooting.

I am saying all of this on the assumption that the camera and hyperdrive did not come as part of the original computer package. If it was part of the original package, one would expect the restore disk to fix it.

Why not give us the exact info on each item, its model number, mfr et al. We can then go to the mfr's website and get to read the instructions ao that we may help further.

I'm going to alert Toni H. one of the Moderators of this ME forum. She is an expert on these USB issues.

Are "pen drive" and the "memory stick "
May 24, 2005 6:15AM PDT

the same thing????

I would expect that the issues will be cleared up when the stuff is removed and reinstalled again in the proper ordered into a clean system. [no camera residue left].

Solution to come most likely from Robert or Toni, or maybe Grif from the newbies forum. I use memory sticks for file storing or transfer, but have no camera. There are a number of different memory devices for use with cameras. That's why we need to know mnodel numbers.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 24, 2005 7:34AM PDT

I've done it! I put in the recovery disc and went to system restore, into windows ME, have now downloaded onto a disc for future problems, and reloaded windows. Put in pen drive and bingo, computer reads it no problem!
I'm so grateful for your help! Pen drive has lots of photos on which i thought i may loose.

Didn't realise recovery disc worked like this as never had one before.
I'm about to try the camera again, don't know if i dare!

I doubt that I was the one that solved your

Twould expect the camera link to work again.

Camera sorted too.
May 24, 2005 8:19AM PDT

Hey, whoever, whatever, I'm grateful to all! Would never have sorted on my own. And yes my camera is also working like a dream.....and i'm now emailing long overdue photos far and wide!

Just now need a volunteer to sit an exam for me on 21st of June and i'm sorted! Any offers????!!!! I thought not.

Till the next time.....

I believe that your recovery CD is what
May 23, 2005 8:35AM PDT

is being called the ME CD. It does have ME on it, in the obscure way that restore CD's are created.

It is possible that the driver needs some info [a file] from the restore CD to complete the driver installation.

If I am confusing you with regard to Robert's posts, stick with Robert.

That insert ME CD message.
May 24, 2005 6:11AM PDT

I bet it noted some file. If so, the procedure to fix might be at http://www.usbman.com or support.microsoft.com

Is there a filename in the message?
