hybernation, suspended, sleep modes at random

The subject title may not make sense, and none o this makes perfect sense to me yet.
Are these terms referring to pretty much the same thing? My monitor seems to go off at random. Sometimes if I leave it on for a few hours or all day, it's still on when I get home. Sometimes if I don't touch it, the monitor goes off in a few minutes. What's really eery is that a few times I sit down to work and it goes off right then - really weird.
I rarely use aol, but when I do, there's a message - just sometimes - after a few minutes or hours that it was logged off when the computer went into suspended mode.
There is NO screen saver, and suspended mode is NOT checked in Control Panel.
This happens on both my XP and Vista machines.
