Humming Hard Drive

Jul 11, 2007 9:48AM PDT

Everytime I boot up my Dell Desktop, I get a humming noise out of my hard drive that could range from ten minutes to three hours. Any thoughts on what the problem might be and how I can go about fixing it?

Windows XP SP2

are you talking actual hard drive or.......

The computer case. If it is the actual hard drive (piece inside the computer case that holds the information on it) then I would recommend to back up essential files and be prepared to replace this thing in the near future. I wouldnt rush out and do this but just be prepared in case it dies.
If it is coming from the case itself it could be a fan that is off balanced (usually caused from built up dust). If this is the case you can try cleaning it off. If this doesnt stop the noise then you either have to put up with the noise or replace it.
