General discussion

Hulu worked, then it didn't

Jun 25, 2010 9:10PM PDT

I have a new, scratch-build computer which was really overdue.

I installed (and activated/validated) XP home edition on it initially (I'll do Win7 on another drive soon). I spent about a day and a half getting all the updates and some basic functionality on it . . . Flash, Adobe Reader, Shockwave, IE8, etc.

Part of the reason I chose that particular day to switch cpu boxes was that hulu had started freezing up. I got it to work last night and watched one brief video, now it doesn't even show the opening advertisement but freezes immediately on attempting to open a video.

The site works fine, but when I try to open a video it freezes after about two seconds of the "Loading" logo. All links on the page cease to function; getting the window to shut down is difficult, even with the new version of WinPatrol; the video window goes completely black.

What are the common causes? I can play video on some other streaming sites . . .

When I used M$ updates, I got every one available save one that said it had to do with Win7 databases.

This has happened to me, starting a couple weeks ago, still happening off-and-on. But I have Win7 64, and use Firefox. No WinPatrol.

Maybe its a problem with their site, maybe with the newer flash updates.
Its a fancy Flash player, and more features = more that can go wrong.

Update
Jul 2, 2010 7:11PM PDT

I got things working a while ago and thought I'd mention how in case it's helpful to anyone else.

1) I used Add/Remove Software to uninstall everything by Adobe, including Reader.
2) Then I started installing things again directly from Adobe's website.
3) I now have Flash Player, Flash Player ActiveX, and Reader . . . I do NOT have Shockwave, that seems to have been the offending program.

Anyway, it works now.
