It's what its there for.
Hi, I run WinXP on a Toshiba laptop with Celeron processor and 20G space, 5.1 free. (If you need any other data, please ask).
The problem is this:
The taskbar is a big gray line. There is no Start button, and no lines or colors appear, and no boxes saying which programs are open. The only thing that works on it is the tray.
Also, in Windows Explorer, no icons appear above the filenames (as they should in my view settings). The only way to know what the file is or even if its a file or a folder is by the info area in the left frame.
And most critical, about 80% of all programs do not work. The error they give is this:
The application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
This happens even with many Windows programs such as Notepad and even certain Control Panel items.
My personal feelings: the registry has been corrupted. I'd just like a second opinion and a suggestion as to my next course of action. Oh, and RegEdit.exe is one of those programs that give the error...argh
