html shortcuts on desktop not working

Nov 29, 2004 4:15AM PST

I am using a Micron Millennia desktop, WinXP Home.When I click on a shortcut on the desktop to go to a website I get this message:"Windows cannot find http://www.weightwatchers.com."Same message, different address with each different shortcut to an Internet site. Computer very slow on the Internet (I have broadband (Road Runner). Have looked for Spyware but negative result. Also having trouble with not being able to open an underlined URL- just a hand appears- no hourglass.

That link is working fine for me for some reason. IE6 XP SP2. Maybe it's a browser thing? I think you are using Netscape or Firefox if I remember correctly Mark but I don't know about the original poster. That would NOT explain the slow running of the computer though.

Hmmm weird.

Worked first time for me now, Happy Using Firefox, but at the moment I cannot get it to work in IE.

I noticed that http://www.weightwatchers.com changed immediately to;

http://www.weightwatchers.com/siteRequirements.aspx?javascript=False&cookies=False&browserVersion=5&browserType=Firefox as soon as I entered http://www.weightwatchers.com , and in IE it changed immediately to;
http://www.weightwatchers.com/util/browserdetect.aspx?redirectURL=http://www.weightwatchers.co.uk/index.aspx
but would not load the page.

As I type, it still hasn't loaded the page in an IE window.

If susien can also supply other desktop url shortcuts we can check those as well.

I think I have misled you by giving the weightwatchers website- it was only meant as an example. What I really think is that there is something really wrong with my computer and I don't know how to fix it yet. I got rid of SP2- maybe I should get it back. I have done System Restore for way back in October when I did not have this problem and that did not help.

Susien,

Most of the other web sites you gave worked for me, one didn't.

Did you read that Microsoft Help and Support link I gave you? If you cannot click the link to go to the web site, copy and paste it into your web browser, then press enter.

If that doesn't work, you could also try a utility program calloed IEFIX, available from here;

susien428, It could be that you have a file association problem with htm/html files. Go to the link below and click on Win XP Fixes, click on File Association Fixes, then download & run the "HTM/HTML Associations (Restore the default associations for htm/html files)" file. The files listed here are all ZIP files, which contain a REG (Registry) file. Download the ZIP and open it. Extract the REG file to your hard disk and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt.
