It used to be like this- upgrade to a non-ATT branded smartphone from a private party. Place current ATT SIM card into 'dumbphone'. Login to OLAM and switch data plan to cheapest option. Move SIM card into new unbranded smartphone. Voila!
Unfortunately, now you won't always see the option in the online account manager (OLAM) for the dumbphone data plan, even when you are switching to a non-ATT branded smartphone. It's hit or miss. The reason why 99% of the Nokia smartphones don't trigger a data plan is because ATT doesn't carry them. They do however carry some of the HTC phones.
The more pressing issue is, do you really want to lose your unlimited data plan? There's a good chance that they might switch you to a 2GB plan, even though ATT does not carry the Desire. YMMV.
Hello, everyone I am looking to purchase an unlocked HTC Desire HD (Telus equivalent) with 850/1900 3g bands for data but my question is if I register it with At&t will I have to get their smartphone data plan since the Desire HD and Inspire 4g are basically the same phone but ones for US and others for CA? I am currently on the $30 unlimited plan but would like to go to the $10 unlimited non smartphone plan. When I had my Nokia N8 I was able to use the $10 plan and that gave me 3.5G (atleast thats the icon that was always on my N
. I believe since it is unlocked I wouldn't need an unlimited plan but want to make sure. I also do not want to shell out 600+ on a phone and still be on $30 plan. Anyone can speak from experience or know the information that would be great. Thank you in advance.
