HT in a box for around $200 any good choices?

Oct 22, 2008 2:47AM PDT

I've got an older 27" CRT with VCR built-in. I want to replace my existing stereo and speakers and add HT speakers to my TV and DVD setup. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I don't need the best just something decent. Or just some general guidance would be great too. I'm a noob about HT.

$200 puts you in the Wallmart range.

Wallmart has some systems in your price range, go check them out. John

you can't get anything decent with $200 surround

the speakers are so puny, that they do nothing. no dispersion, no dynamics, they just sorta sit there. seriously. headphones would sound better,

for around that budget, i would just stick with stereo. best pair of speakers you can afford. maybe powered monitors like behringer 2030s

just my opinion

Whats a starting price point for HT then?

Okay $200 is not going to do it. So what will. I want a respectable not great HT setup, what do I have to spend. Keeping in mind my modest means. This may be for my future reference. I don't have an HD TV yet but when I do I will want to get the right HT. Right now I just wanted to get something that begins to do the HT job. I need to get the wife hooked on the 5.1, or so, experience so when I upgrade to the HDTV and Blu-ray, I can convince her we need the appropriate HT setup. Every journey needs a first step. Thanks for your help.

Just saw a htib for 200 at geeks.com. The DVD player is at least an upconverting one. I'm not saying this is it but there is another place other than wally's.
