HT-BD1250 and DVD+RW

Sep 2, 2009 1:14AM PDT

Hi all

I am about to purchase this unit after reading great reviews but I have a question.

After what I've read, this unit plays quite a lot of media including DVD+RW but in page 27 of the English manual it says:

"Discs which can be played on this player.
...? DVD-RW (V mode)"

and

"Discs which cannot be played on this player.
...? DVD+RW..."

Meaning, that it plays DVD-RW but not DVD+RW?

I use a lot DVD+RW to burn .avi files with subtitles and my current, and a bit old Philips plays them with no problems. Even DVD+RW which have been burned many times.

I'd like to be sure that I can play DVD+RW before I buy this unit which I really would like to.

Many thanks for your input.

Paul

paul lemonde,

I downloaded the English language version of the manual to make sure I had the latest one, and the page you referenced talks about MP3 player compatibility.

It's quite possible that certain media may not be able to play. Probably the best thing to would be to take some discs and formats that you regularly use and test it out on the floor model at your local retailer to see which formats will work, and if that will be acceptable for your needs. But not all the features and options traditionally found for DVD automatically transfer over to a Blu-Ray player.

May thanks, Samsung_HD_Tech

Sorry. It's not page 27, but 33 - "Basic functions of your Blu-ray Home Theater" - in the manual which can be downloaded here: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/tv-video/home-theater/home-theater-systems/HT-BD1250T/XAA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support .

I'm gonna be buying this unit online, so any feedback on supported media will be really appreciated.

What confuses me is the statement in the manual mentioning DVD+RW in the "Discs which cannot be played on this player." section

Many thanks
Paul

paul lemonde,

I may have had a different version of the manual, usually they match up. Happy

Not all formats that DVD players traditionally supported are going to be implemented. Naturally, the logical conclusion that past technologies are easily implementable in new technology is somewhat of a debatable topic.

Picture in Picture, for instance, is far easier to implement in analog tuners than it is in digital tuners, even though the picture and technology for digital is superior.

Likewise, formats that players traditionally may have supported in the past aren't always a given in new products.

Strangely enough, just to test this out today, I burned a copy of a movie I have onto a DVD+R (not RW) and it seems to work okay initially (v.1.0 software, for those keeping track). I didn't have an RW handy so I haven't been able to test that. I'm not sure I can come up with an explanation for that.
