HP Scanjet G3010 w/Mac OS 10.6

Jan 21, 2015 1:43AM PST

Details: iMac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), HP Scanjet G3010.

Problem: iMac was OS 10.5 (Leopard). I installed the G3010 and no problem. iMac (some how) was "upgraded" to OS 19.6 (how is a mystery to me, I never purchased any upgrade).

The HP software that came with the G3010 only supports OS 10.5. The HP website says to upgrade to 10.6 compatibility install/reinstall original OS 10.5 software, run the scanner to check for compatibility and one can then upgrade to OS 10.6 compatibility. The difficulty is it is impossible to get compatibility with the 10,5 version. HP does not seem to have a direct download for the 10.6 compatibility.

I know the sacnner and the iMac are talking as on start up the scanner makes its "start up noises'. But then when I try to open the scanning software I get an error message that there is no HP scanner found.

So how do I get the HP upgrade? Since it seem to be online via getting the scanner "compatible"?

Thank you anyone who tries to help!

Thomas

Again
Jan 21, 2015 3:11AM PST

I'll try that one again. But when I check the OSs supported for Mac it reads: 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5. This driver is from Aug. 2006. Mac OS 10.6 was released in 2009.

I do appreciate your help!!!

I read that too, but then I tried "Mac OS X"
Jan 21, 2015 3:17AM PST

And there is was under Software, Mac OS X, listing 10.6.

I know folk get hung up clicking on the 10.4 and such drop down lists and forget to look under Mac OS X.

Possibly a little clarification here,
Jan 21, 2015 2:07PM PST

The original OS version installed on the iMac was 10.5 but it was not unusual for Apple to put in place an "Up to Date" program which meant that anyone purchasing an Apple product within a certain time span of a new version of OS X being released, in your case 10.6, would be entitled to a free download/DVD of that new OS X version.

Perhaps that's where/how your iMac got updated.

Just a thought

Good News Bad News
Jan 21, 2015 11:01PM PST

First a thank you to Bob, as I had seen the link to upgrading the HP driver for 10.6. But a day later I could not find it and it was driving me to frustration. Embarrassed as it was there, almost hiding in plain sight.

I have downloaded it, upgraded my HP G3010 driver successfully. That's the good news.

The bad news is the scanner still can not "be found" by my iMac. I had hoped it was a software matter that could be addressed. But, it seems the scanner is the problem, and probably either not fixable, or not cost effective to fix it.

"P" thank you for the info. I will watch out for that in the future. I am leery of upgrades as they often lead to difficulties in my experience...especially with iPads!

Any recommendations for a new flatbed scanner in $100 range? I write books on Arizona history and I need a flatbed for scanning maps, e.g., topos. I liked the G3010 as the "lid" lifted to the back and not to the side which is necessary for what I do.

That software is still there,

Driver? Check. Software? Unsure.

I expanded the Software section, snapped a screen shot to show that. Did you install the driver alone? That makes me think you didn't install the rest of the package.

Once again into the fray
Jan 24, 2015 10:54AM PST

I went back an deleted what I had done to reinstall all the OS 10,6 software to make certain that I had installed all the software. Initially success in that this time I got a window looking for the hardware (scanner). Initially no luck. I changed out the USD cable and it found the scanner. The good news,

The bad news is when I went to do a scan I again got the error message no device found.

Ain't technology wonderful !!

Once again, thank yous to all!

Take a look at this piece of software,
Jan 24, 2015 11:39PM PST

Vuescan.

It contains drivers for just about every scanner that ever lived, and then some.

It has a free trial.

Also, launch Preview on your Mac, with the printer turned on and connected, and take a look at the File > Import From menu

Does it show your scanner?

OR, always the one last chance,

Find and launch the application Image Capture. It is somewhere on your Mac.
It too should "see" your scanner.

Imac Preview and Scanner(s)
Jan 27, 2015 4:13AM PST

P.

I tried Preview and Image Capture (which I have never used). Via Preview I can see my 3 in 1 scanner, but not the flatbed.

In Image Capture I don't see either one.

A moment ago I tried a scan with the flatbed...there was actually a bit of life in the scanner and was like it was going to work, then almost immediately it failed. I am fairly convinced at this point that there is a hardware issue.

Thanks a bunch though for the tips about Preview and Image Capture!

Wait a second. Do you have more than one scanner?

I read a 3in1 and a flatbed?

The peripherals attached are an HP three in one—printer, scanner, fax, a flatbed scanner, a Brother duplex printer and an external HD. The three in one is attached via a Cat 5 cable; the flat bed is attached via an USB cable.

The problem with the flatbed manifested itself well before the three in one was attached.

Possibility

I have an a some what vintage XP machine. I will try it, but it will be some time before I can attend to that option. Good idea! It should solve the software versus hardware question.
