HP Printer, spooler service not running

Mar 19, 2009 5:52AM PDT

I'm running Windows Vista home on an HP Computer and HP Photosmart 2610 printer.

Everytime I try to "add printer" I get

"Windows can't open add printer. The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine."

Now, I went to the CP and found the print spooler. Turned it on manually. It works. But when I click add printer again, I get the same message and the spooler is then turned off.

So, I went to the error log. I get

"The print spooler cannot start because the PrinterBusEnumerator could not start. Error code 0x80070006. This can occur because of system instability or a lack of system resources."

So I look that up and I have found a message board where they give information on this error message. The "instructions" are:

I've found this problem was caused by a registry issue concerning the
PrinterBusEnumerator entry in the System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\UMB
\UMB\1&841921d&0&PrinterBusEnemerator.

Either this entry is corrupt or missing or the required drivers are
not installed. As this is not a plug and play device the drivers are
not installed on a restart or through device manager by clicking
update hardware.

To correct this issue:

Start, [RIGHT CLICK] Computer, Properties, Device Manager
[CONTINUE],

From Menu bar, choose VIEW, Show Hidden devices. Then Devices by
connection.
Scroll to System Devices, and then UMBus Enumerator. Check that there
are two others. Do not delete.

If there are three:

Right click on the bottom one. Choose properties. Under details tab
choose under the property combo box DEVICE CLASS GUID.
Confirm GUID matches that under the DRIVER entry in the registry as
above.
Right click and uninstall (you will reinstall in a second)

If the GUID does not match, choose the other two until you find the
correct one.

Choose ACTION, ADD LEGACY HARDWARE
Choose NEXT
Choose INSTALL THE HARDWARE THAT I MANUALLY SELECT.. (ADVANCED)
Choose SYSTEM DEVICES, then MICROSOFT and UMBUS Enumerator

Restart, a system install will begin on restart of various associated
drivers.
When complete, restart again and check service is running.

So we follow the first part of the directions but as we get to device manager and hidden devices....there is no system device listed therefore I can't find the UMBus Enumerator.

Ok this all sounds really complicated to me but I'm trying to fix it and these are the only things I'm finding.

When my computer was reformatted last month, the printer worked the day up until it was reformatted. After the reformat, it won't work anymore. nothing changed on the system...been running Vista the entire time and I downloaded the same software for the printer from the HP site.

after reformatting, you failed to install all the needed drivers.

I have though, thats the problem. I got the software and drivers from the HP site and installed them. Now, if they installed incorrectly, I've been trying to find them to get them out and redo it.
