HP Printer Firmware Specific to OS?

Oct 16, 2008 7:55AM PDT

Forgive the greenhorn but I'm about to swap an Officejet Pro L7580 off of Leopard and put it on Vista 64. I know, look at the guy who actually uses Vista. Hilarious. That said, if I upgrade the firmware for the printer via the file I downloaded from the Vista 64 files on HP website, will that render it inoperable again on Leopard when I reconnect with the Mac?

Firmware

The firmware update "IF REQUIRED" at the link:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-62448-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=2512008&os=2100&lang=en

shows what it enhances. If you have no problem with your prtr. now don't do a firmware update. As I stated before the driver is what attaches your prtr. to the system as the case maybe. Even if you need the firmware update, the info provided by HP shows no dependence on the OS involved, its a prtr. issue. Upon reviewing this info, the initial 1st HP support webpage shows the system requirements, it can be used by either Mac or Windows based system.

Firmware?

Let's clear the terms abit, firmware is not drivers, which is what I believe you're posting about. You will need a driver to run your system on Vista 64, if the OS itself doesn't post a "native driver" to run the prtr. Getting the HP driver for that version of Vista is required then. As for under Leopard use, these are different and again, they're use is required in the same sense though. Each system with have present if already installed, thus swapping the prtr. back and forth is possible. If you use some switching h/w, this does the same task w/o physically moving if that is what you're doing now. This option and others can be better explained once full details are provided.

If HP is actually stating the use of "firmware" for use in either system, then please post a link for review.
