HP Photosmart 7960 printer will not recognize computer

Just bought HP Photosmart 7960. Have been on phone with HP tech for over ten hours over several days because when, after loading software, cannot save photos from printer to computer via multimedia card. Message on printer display says it cannot locate computer, please connect to computer (it is!). Tried connecting printer to my work computer (windows 2000) and everything worked okay. Can the problem be with the ME operating system on my home computer?

I wonder

Yes, I was wondering if it might be a corruption of the operating system. I'm a fraidy cat and really don't want to restore the Me operating system. What do you think?
