Question

HP Pavillion hv5 USB ports are broken please help!

Oct 14, 2012 7:41AM PDT

My roommate has a HP Pavillion hv5 also and one of her usb ports stopped working. Now her last usb port stopped working and she took it to Best Buy and they told her that unless she wanted to pay for her motherboard to be replaced she'd have to get another laptop. Her warranty for the computer ran out sometime this year. I was wondering if there was another way to hook up her printer to her laptop without using USB such as ESATA or another port? She really doesn't want to get a new laptop just yet since its only 3 years old but we're college students and the use of a printer is vitally important. If anyone has information on that please respond.

Maybe a WiFi printer is the cheap fix?

While I can't see the ports to see if the common user issue is at play (they tug on them too hard and the solder breaks) the cheapest fix I know of is a new printer with WiFi.

There's also the old email me the file to print it fix.

problem with a wireless printer is that in order to set up the printer you have to plug it into the laptop for the first time Sad after that its wireless. unless they make wireless printers that dont require to be plugged in the first time.

That doesn't happen here.

I won't bore you with details but our Canon mx870 does not require such a step. I also can't list all that do this today.

from your opinion if someone was to replace the usb ports would you have to do anything to the motherboard in order to remove the usb ports? because the best buy geek squad told my roommate that in order to replace the usb port they had to replace the motherboard.

I do not know which dv5 you have.

But I found it intriguing that an under 10 buck part might do the trick. Remember that this port and the chip behind gets all the wrath (users, bolts of juice, etc.) So I can't guess how many PCs you've dived into.

I've lost count here.

Teardown and repair

If you're capable and it appears Robert offers what maybe a USB pcb replacement bd. This is a separate item that attaches to the mtrbd. of the laptop. You do however need to disassemble the laptop in order to access the area. Google, maybe a Youtube on disassembly but following latter model HP laptops should give an idea as its generic to many laptops. You can do before you make an actual repair as you see what the damage is, as in physical breakage or solder breaks, etc.. If something else, then you proceed from there. Since more than one USB is hosed, you maybe also using some USB device that over-taxing the USB port and it fries it sooner or later. So take all this into accoutn and seek a repair that best suits your needs.
