Parts I'd swap out.

From the story provided I'd try a new hard disk and CDROM drive.

I don't need floppy drives anymore. Here's how I cope.

I've learned how to make bootable CDs of my old DOS and other tools. The world has changed drastically and nothing fits on 1.44MB plus a bootable CD costs far less than a diskette drive.

This has been rough on some since we had to upgrade our skills.

The bottom line

Same model. Same error. It's all an exercise in futility. The "disk read error" message clearly indicates that your hard disk is defective. Swapping the other components will have no effect.

Try running the hard disk test utlility from the built-in BIOS setup. During the POST bootup sequence (as soon as you see the HP logo), press F10. Go to the TOOLS menu and select the HDD Self-test.

If you get an error code (07-Fail) you must replace the hard drive. Kiss your files and data goodbye. Hope your warranty is still in effect.

I have same computer with same problem. Ran HDD Self-test and it came out ok. unable to format the drive. I have a Toshiba MK6021 GAS-(PM) hard drive. must I order this exact model or do I have other choices?

By burying your post here you may not get a lot of responses.

The answer is that you don't need the exact drive in most situations. But details are slim and until you tell all it's best to get the same size drive.
