hp pavilion problem

i have an hp pavilion g7-1139wm it started to shut down when i watched videos then it would just shut down randomly.well i bought a new hard drive about a week later it died on me. when i try to turn it on the lights turn on for about 2 minutes then shut off it never turns on just the lights do what could be the issue

It could be PSU, motherboard or other. Here's a well done video on troubleshooting the dead desktop PC.

hp has a recall on the power cord and i used this laptop for around a year with the bad power cord do you think the faulty power cord caused the motherboard to burn out? hp says its the motherboard and that i need a new one

I doubt they will warrant anything beyond the power cord given the age and the time folk had to get it replaced. Given the usual repair costs I'd shop for a new laptop and ebay the dead one.

As to what's on the HDD I suggest you pull it and place it in this case to get at your old files:
