HP pavilion- big screen is better or not?

Nov 24, 2009 11:37AM PST

I have to choose between HP Pavilion dv4-1551dx which has a 14.1" screen and a HP Pavilion dv6-1234nr which has a 15.6" screen. Both have more or less the same specs otherwise and are priced the same too. Which one would you recommend? I have heard that dv4 having a smaller size and weight might have heating issues after a year of purchase or so. Anyone having any experiences with either of the two laptops and could help me?
Thanks!

Have a dv6
Nov 24, 2009 11:52AM PST

The screen size is what I use for hours a day and for me fine. You must see each in person to make that judgment.

The dv6-1261sb does run warm. Look at what's in this beast and you see why. It does NOT overheat. But then I tilted the back so the keyboard angle is better for me and that affords some extra air space and flow.

However I think it will be your usual few year laptop in that advances will have me cycle this out in 2 years. If I had the 1250 I would have preferred that as I have no need for the 3d chipset but then we have the upgrade to 7 Pro for which the work I do would have the price go right back to the 1K mark.

Hope this helps and be sure to see both KEYBOARDS as those are not identical.

The 4500MHD graphics surprised me at how many games my kid threw at it.

Bob,
Thanks! But I am not sure I understand what you mean by If I had 1250...
Are you suggesting that I get a laptop with Win 7 pre-installed instead of waiting to get the free upgrade CD from HP?

FYI

just a heads up on the Pavilions, there are a whole bunch of disgruntled Pavilion owners out there because some models have a defective motherboard or GPU which overheats and eventually renders the machine inoperable.

I am not sure whether HP has completely eliminated that problem in the Pavilions that are shipping now; does anybody know for sure?

The dv6000 and dv9000 issue is with
Nov 24, 2009 8:57PM PST

The Nvidia parts and a failed contact, solder system. HP caught the brunt of that issue while you see it was not an exclusive to HP when you google 8400 DEFECTIVE to see the others.

But as you expect, to hit these low prices something had to go.

About pre-installed 7 comment.

I did the math on the cost of getting 7 Pro pre-installed versus the 1250 and upgrading to 7 Pro. You can do such math too but maybe you don't need the version upgrade like I did. Not duplicate what the versions have here. Widely discussed.

There is a benefit of having it ready to use. You get to use the machine rather than upgrade, hunt for drivers etc.

I looked up the specs of the 2 laptops and it looks like

the DV6 is a LED display and the DV4 is a LCD display. When i look on HP's page it specified LED for the DV6 and didn't say LED for the DV4 so I'm assuming its an LCD.

Here's a link describing differences in LED versus LCD. LED's are also hitting the HDTV market at a couple hundred dollars more then the LCD's.

Best Buy deal- something going wrong?
Nov 25, 2009 5:48AM PST

I have more or less decided to get the HP Pavilion dv4-1551dx but I realised that BestBuy is offering the laptop for $599 but laptop+carrying case+printer for $549! Does this indicate that the laptop is not selling well or something like that?

Deal or no deal?

What good is a machine you didn't want? That is, the basics of size and keyboard would over-ride any deal.
