HP Pavilion 7955 "Clicking"???

Dec 10, 2004 12:29PM PST

Hello all! Have a HP and when I go to turn it on I get the basic HP Blue Screen logo when I power up & then it gives me a "disk boot failure, insert system disk & press enter". The moment I power it on I start to hear a clicking noise. Bought in 2001 and has XP Home on it. HP provided no disks when I bought, so had to order from them. Have been told by a couple friends that sounds like the Hard Drive is toast, that is what the clicking noise is. Was just going to replace the hard drive, anything I should know about trying this? HP said they were sending me like 9 disks?!?! Help!!

Hard drives fail sooner or later.

The message and clicking sound are all too familiar.
From what you describe, it sounds as if the hard drive has failed.
The computer is telling that the drive is not functioning. The clicking sound is the reason why.

Thanks for the reply! Anything I need to know about getting a new hard drive and then using these 9 disks to I guess install the OS, etc?

HP pavilion: Have heard nothing but bad things about that model. I work around dozens of techies all day and the popular saying is; avoid Hewlitt packard/compaq, BIG time, because they tend to have many conflicts with hardware.
I had that same message once and had to replace my hard drive also.

Just a thought,

Is there a floppy disk inside the floppy disk drive?

If so, and if it is "not" a system disk, that will give you a clicking noise, (sound of the floppy disk drive), and eventually a "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press Enter" message.

Yes, not a floppy issue. Actually had a buddy show me how to format a floppy to try to get the computer to do anything and it said that the hard drive could not be found. Does anyone have advice on replacing the hard drive and re-installing Windows XP Home from the recovery disks that HP sends?

After you install a new hard drive, you will need to install everything from those recovery disks. The recovery or restore CD sets from HP are simple to use. They should be marked disk 1, disk 2, etc. Put disk 1 in the CD drive, restart the computer and follow the instructions. You need to have the CD drive be the first boot up device for this to work.

I am sorry, I just felt compelled to vent my frustration about HP Pavilions. I have one and it is the worst computer that I ever bought. If you sneeze or breath a bit hard it will lockup and require rebooting. And most often, it does not shut down properly forcing you to use the power switch. It came with win 98 and I upgraded it to window ME but it did not change a thing!

Believe me, understand the frustration. Mine came with a CD Burner and it went out on my about 14 months later when it wasn't under warrantee any longer.
