HP Pavilion 513n Shutdown

by PMPPATRICK / October 26, 2006 7:34 AM PDT

Pavilion is 4 yrs old w/recent 160gb hd 768 ram. Last
wk started shutting down on its own after a few hrs-
gradually diminishing in 'up'time. Now cuts off after
starting boot-up(though stays on in safe mode)Have
replaced psu and hd-no change. Will not stay on long
enough to reinstall XP.Did virus/malware scans last wk
found nothing.Could it be processor or motherboard?
Should I punt?

No joke. It's amazing no one tells owners about a yearly cleaning plan.

It never ends...

In closing, today's pests are more virulent than ever. But not enough clues in your post to point to any "do this" cure.

Try the usual cleanups of dust and more then scan with EWIDO and HOUSECALL.

If it shuts down fast like that I'll relate a story when an owner discovered a few issues.

1. The heatsink came partially off.
2. Someone didn't put heatsink compound or the heat conductive material on the CPU to heatsink.

For now, leave the cover off and research how the heatsink fits on the CPU and get a small dab of heatsink compound.

Same symptoms on Pavilion 712a

Hi

Wondering if you were able to fix the problem? I have a pavilion 712a showing the same symptoms. The problem has got steadily worse, and it now shuts down after no more than a minute or two.

It stays on indefinitely (well, overnight) if I go into setup mode as soon as it is powered on, or in safe mode, but shuts itself down soon after booting in normal mode. I booted an Ubuntu CD I had and it still shuts down - guess that rules out a virus. Seems to happen only in high res graphics modes.

Thanks

When it ends with no report back, the chances are they found a solution.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
