Question

HP pavilion 15 lappy power button to be pressed many times

Jul 12, 2015 2:34AM PDT

hello. i have a HP pavilion 15 e026ax laptop. for past few days, i have to press power button multiple times to turn it on. everytime i press power button, the wifi dedicated light turn on for 1 sec. nothing happens to power button light. It happens until laptop finally turns on. If laptop is used and turned off and i turn it on after some time, it opens at once. But if it is kept off for long duration(more than 8 hours), then again i have to tap power button multiple times. So far, I have tried battery draining and direct power supply. Nothing worked. Any advice?

Answer
Prepare for the end.

I can't tell how old this is but the first order of business is to be ready for a wipe out. Be sure your backups are current and ready for a move to a new blank laptop, even if it's this one.

Try it without the laptop battery. I don't see how old this one is so I can't give the nod to try it without the battery or to advise you have it taken in under warranty.

Is it a software or hardware problem? Should i try something or give it to a repair shop?

Software problem is easy to figure out.

If software we can see the bios screen, maybe some OS will try to boot but "press power button multiple times to turn it on." points to some hardware issue.

Sadly this model looks to be about 670USD so why no extended warranty? OOW (out of warranty) repair here tends to run about half that as they replace motherboard and what else?

could it be CMOS battery?

Well, thanks for reponse. Could it be a bad CMOS battery? bcoz my laptop loses time and I have to correct it everytime? It seems like there is a component inside which needs charging through pressing of power button. The number of times I have to press power button is increasing day by day.

Why not change that? It's cheap.

The story didn't tell me it was that. But it's a 2 dollar part so well worth changing.
