hp lj2300 prob

we have n hp lj 2300 printer - worked fine till the toner came up empty - it's got a new toner cart in now BUT when it's finished warming up there are 2 rows of asterisks on the display. none of the buttons respond (on.off line etc.) and no lights show after warm up. the printer has been checked for jams all connections are ok - it's bee nremoved from the hp print server - no change - it's been hooked up to a stand alone - no change.

anybody got any ideas
