HP Laserjet 4L replacement

Feb 16, 2006 12:59AM PST

Hi. My beloved HP Laserjet 4L died the other day and I am looking for an inexpensive replacement replacement. I am basically looking for another laser printer for home use, that doesn't have any bells and whistles, all i want is print black and white text files, receipts etc...

My main question is this:
Can someone recommend a basic model, that does run with minimum system foot print on Windows XP? I don't want to buy anything that needs a crap-load of 500 megabytes installed onto my computer, and slows my startup time and system down and add 5 processes to my running tasks, as unfortunately so many new printers these days do.

How is that inexpensive Samsung ML-2010 in this regard? Thanks

Why not HP?

They make units that have a parallel port, can fake it as some HP PCL printer and no driver change at all.

What model?

I have no brand preference at all and only mentioned that Samsung because right now it is available for around 80 bucks after Mail in Rebate.

I briefly looked at HPs but they seem to cost a lot more. What model does what you mentioned above?

A lot more? When I compare my HP Laserjet+ cost.

That was over 1,000 bucks and today's HPs with a parallel port are in the 2 to 3 hundred range or less.

I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Work For Me!

I traded my LaserJet 4L for a Samsung ML-2010. The Samsung was very easy to set up and didn't seem to load much stuff on my hard disk. It works just fine. It prints a lot faster than my 4L, but it makes a LOT of noise when it is running.

I still have my 11 year old 4L, but I put it with my wife's PC because she doesn't print as much as I do. I got the HP 1022 which ran
