HP laserjet 4200n explorer error when going to printing pref

Apr 21, 2005 10:43PM PDT

I have serveral HP4200n's on different print servers and one is having a problem. The server is Windows 2k3 SP1 fully updated. The drivers are 4200n PCL6 drivers just downloaded from HP this week.
The issue started right after SP1 with one user trying to print and getting the whole page printed in the top corner of the sheet. After removing and readding the drivers and remapping her to the printer she could print full pages but gets this explorer.exe error when going to printer preferances Explorer.exe error Function address 0x77c43ec0 caused a protection fault. (exception code 0xc00000005) Some or all property page(s) may not be displayed.
When she started getting the inital error I mapped to that printer with my admin account and also got the same error. after changing the drivers i remapped also and i get the error. On some computers on this network though i can login with my admin account and not get the error at all. All computers are XP SP1 all updates except SP2. The issue is not user related but computer related since I can login different machines and get different results. Any help would be great.

HP knows this one.
Apr 21, 2005 10:48PM PDT

But good luck hitting the support person that knows it.

2003 SP1 does involve security issues and while you may think it's not the users, it is. Think about permissions, and what groups the failed users belong to.

Not users
Apr 21, 2005 11:34PM PDT

It can not be the users. Since I can login as the all powerful administrator and with my admin account and get the error on some computers but not others. Some regular user accounts have the same symptoms on some it works on other computers it dont.

All powerful, please look at...

1. The EVENT VIEWER.

2. HP.

I hinted that HP knows the issue. Sometimes the people with the problem will never call it in. 2003 SP1 is breaking a few things and HP knows the issue. I can't supply the fix but have fixed ours.

A comment. All-powerful Administrator still ...
Apr 21, 2005 11:59PM PDT

Must comply with the rules. Here's a simple example.

For instance a registry key can be made read-only EVEN to the administrator. A "write" or change to such a key can result in the famous C0000005 type error. New to NT/2000/XP/2003 users may not fathom that "all-powerful" accounts don't bypass permissions.

Think about it.

Sorry if you took my use of all powerful the wrong way. I was just letting you know that even the "administrator" account can get the error sometimes. I did check the event log system warning Printer Driver HP LaserJet 4200 PCL 6 for Windows NT x86 Version-3 was added or updated. Files:- UNIDRV.DLL, UNIDRVUI.DLL, HPC42006.GPD, UNIDRV.HLP, hpcui05.dll, hpcxrd05.dll, hpc42006.xml, hpcsch05.dtd, hplj4200.cfg, hpcdmc32.dll, hpbcfgre.dll, HPBMIAPI.DLL, HPBOID.EXE, HPBOIDPS.DLL, HPBPRO.EXE, HPBPROPS.DLL, HPPAPTS0.DLL, HPPASNM0.DLL, HPPAPML0.DLL, HPZIPM12.EXE, HPZIPT12.DLL, HPZINW12.EXE, HPZIPR12.DLL, HPZISN12.DLL, HPJCMN2U.DLL, HPJIPX1U.DLL, hp6mac05.gpd, hpsmac05.gpd, hpc4200c.ini, hpcstr05.dll, hpcevt05.dll, pjl.gpd, pclxl.gpd, hpcljx05.hlp, UNIRES.DLL, STDNAMES.GPD, HPBMMON.DLL, HPDOMON.DLL, HPBHEALR.DLL, HPC420X6.GPD, P6DISP.GPD, HPNRA.EXE, HPBMINI.DLL, HPBNRAC2.DLL, HPC420X6.XML, HPCEAC05.HPI, HPPRN05.DLL, PCLXL.DLL.

The thing that bothers me is the fact that i am mapped to another 4200n (different server) and everything works fine all around.

And why we always look in the Event Viewer for clues.
Apr 22, 2005 12:35AM PDT

However, I know HP knows the answer.

I can't share it since your setup differs from mine.

-> Did you call it in?

Take no offense but it appears you are still learning how to admin this new OS. Please dig in and see what's in the Event Viwer. Without it, I can't comment if it's an easy fix.

Trying
Apr 22, 2005 12:50AM PDT

You are right I am still learning. I come from a helpdesk and Hated when people would call in without reseaching first. That is why I am trying everything first the helpdesk is my last choice for help. if you dont want to help me since i am i guess hard headed that is fine but here is the new info. I just took a spare laptop that my former coworker was using and logged in with my admin account and got the error. I reimaged the laptop and logged in with my admin account and did not get the error. I tried on my laptop to remove all my connections to 4200n's I then went from my list of printers to file server properties and saw my 4200 driver. I stopped my local print spooler and started it back and removed my 4200 driver forcing it to download new ones (so i think) of course after reboot and remapping i am still getting the error. I noticed in the event log the entry from adding my good 4200 was the same as the one i just posted the bad 4200 event log had some different stuff.
Thanks for your help Bob, I do not usually try to sound like i know more than i do (those kind of people bug me) I know I am still learning and I enjoy learning. This issue is just eating at me since i cant find a fix (without the helpdesk).

I need what's in the Event Viewer.
Apr 22, 2005 1:02AM PDT

I know how you feel, but without that item...

Also, clear the event viewer (all 3 areas) so we only get what is relevant to the C0000005 error.

-> Usually I find it's a key "permissions" issue and armed with that I can use REGEDT32 to set the permissions proper.

Not sure if this helps

I cleared all 3 and tried to go to the preferances. the only thing that pops up in the event viewer is under system. Read that carefully.
Apr 22, 2005 1:25AM PDT

It would all too easy to get a C000005 error if you update those files like that.

Again, both Microsoft and HP have the answer for this one.

-> Part of it can be that you have different printer drivers on various machines and Microsoft may copy such up or down and trip the C0000005 violation.

I got it fixed
Apr 22, 2005 5:53AM PDT

The drivers were the problem. I was finally able to get my fix to work after breaking it on the server. I went to windows update and there was a hardware update for the 4200n which i downloaded and installed just to make sure it was driver related. I then tried from the server which had been working fine to go to print prefs and it gave the error. The problem was when i was removing and readding drivers it was not getting everything. There was a folder named 3 under C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86 that I had to rename. and then I was able to add the drivers I downloaded from HP. that cleared up my error.
Thanks anyway for the help. It sure helps you learn alot when you research and fix an issue yourself instead of calling the helpdesk and them giving you the awnser.

Are we sure that is the right link???
Apr 28, 2005 6:26AM PDT

I am really glad that Bob was able to provide us with the link that fixed the problem; however, when I clicked on the link (http://ct.enews.eweek.com/rd/cts?d=186-1939-1-94-164081-218903-0-0-0-1) it gave me no indication that it related to the solution at all.

The heading for the link posted reads "Clock Is Ticking for Windows 2000 Users" and is dated April 22, 2005 -- the same day as Bob's post. This obviously does not provide us with any information to solve our problem. If possble, could someone please post the solution (instead of another dynamic web address). I have been searching for days and cannot find anything on this.

Thanks in advance.

By the way, deleting the entire \3\ folder under C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\ is not really an option as we have quite a number of HP printers and this folder has all of the configurations which has taken quite some time to set up.

It appears to be a driver problem.
Apr 28, 2005 6:41AM PDT

What many don't know is if you use what's on a CD... it's out of date.

Bob

ps. web rots links.... or a link may vanish, change or such and that is beyond my control.

Might want to try
Apr 28, 2005 9:55PM PDT

If you cant delete the 3 folder maby inside the 3 folder look for the HPC42006.gpd file that would be the bad file if it has the 7.28.2004 date. The new date 7.28.2004 is the bad version not the old 11.4.2003 so the CD would be the best choice for the driver not windows update. if you delete the HPC file and replace it with the HPC file off cd or from HP downloads you should be ok. Havent tried it but it should work in theory.
