Question

HP laptop Windows 7 64 bit Copy Image Function

Jan 7, 2012 11:47AM PST

Is there a quicker way to copy image? MS instructions is causing my dvd drive errors when I'm copying image to cd disk. MS istructions are giving you two ways to copy your HD image. Both sets of options are showing media too small error and when I go and check if anything is showing copied image nothing is on that disk. I'm using cd-r 700 mb disks from Best Buy.

So you want to copy a CD?

Frankly there are a few things I would change.

1. Use something like CDBURNERXP (works on 7) to copy your CDs.
2. If the media is too small I might bet the source CD was "overburned." (see google)
3. CDBURNERXP and IMGBURN are both free and can overburn a little but overburning is frightfully dependent on the media and the drive. It's not supported by anyone.

HP laptop Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium Copy Image Function
Jan 8, 2012 2:40AM PST

Can I get a different answer on how to use the copy image function in Windows 7. Let me clarify, I'm trying to make an image copy of my HD using a cd-r disk in the dvd slot and Microsoft gives you two options on how to do this and neither option would work with my Best Buy 700 mb cds.

Unlikely.

If Microsoft only allowed DVD media then no one will be able to help you.

I had to guess what you were doing and it looks like I guessed wrong.

Try DVD media next.

FAILED using media disks after 91% Windows 7 Home Prem. Ed.

I think I have 23 disks with the same thing copied to them when I used the MS instructions for making a Backup Recovery of files, when I wanted to make an image copy of harddrive and that MS option will not be allowed and is grayed out. When I viewed disks in Internet Explorer all seem to have same files? The only thing that worked in the MS options was the System Repair disk and making a copy to disk media. What's the point MS is trying to make, when they probably realize none of these functions to copy image or backup and recovery methods work? I found some interesting sites on MS Knowlegebase site saying the same thing about Windows 7 Ultimate edition. I would like to go back to the tried and true method of using DOS at the c: to copy image to a different media, ie. HP vault on our network Is this at all possible in Windows 7? What is the point of scheduling a task that doesn't work?

Why yes I have.

I created the Recovery Media and then never looked at it again. Why? (you might ask)

It's simple. I've found Microsoft's backup software to do very odd things over the years. Since they lost my trust long ago and problems continue with this one in Windows 7, I don't use it. If you are asking me to fix that software, I have to send you to Redmond.

Cannot use CD's

You cannot backup your HD to CD. You must use DVD media or an external hard drive.

DVD media

Using Toshiba DVD external and doing a first time full backup on HP. I have used only 15 disks and backup is 79 % complete. I'm going to purchase Ghost to do a harddrive copy image because MS option for doing this was grayed out?

Skip Ghost. Get Acronis.

Ghost is now owned by some company that seems to have let it languish.
