Question

HP LAPTOP START UP PROBLEM

Aug 24, 2017 10:17AM PDT

Hello technicians,

I have a problem with my hp pavilion dv6000 laptop in which it fails to start up with the display remaining on the "HP INVENT" screen. It later goes blank and shows that the operating system is not found and the media test failed. Is this a hard drive problem that I need to replace? Please help & Thanks in advance kind people!

It's either a failed hard drive or a failed motherboard. Or somebody deleted the OS from your hard drive. Boot into a Linux disc or stick (free to make) to look at the disk.

That's the series and not the laptop model.

We have one or two of the DV series between office and home. If they fail it may be the end as they are now about 8 years old.

My mom's laptop was stolen so she got this for about 125USD to the door.

We used the last known Windows 10 free upgrade and it's great.

Download a Linux Live CD and boot off that to check the disk - I use Knoppix for diagnostics but any distro will do. Or if you can find a bootable Partition Wizard CD, that has some disk diagnostics on it.

If it's the disk, it's probably worth getting a new one, anything deeper and it won't be economic to repair, even if you can find the parts.
