Question

HP Laptop and Windows 10

Apr 29, 2017 12:46AM PDT

I have an HP laptop that is about 4 years old. I upgraded to Windows 10 a few years ago and have had problems ever since. Because of these problems, the laptop has rarely been used.

Every browser has been tried and each of them lag. The circle that shows a page is loading will spin for what seems to be 5 minutes per page. Videos stutter and never play smoothly. Error messages such as' "if playback doesn't begin shortly try restarting your device" are seen every time I attempt to watch a video in YouTube or even on a news site such as CNN.

When I try to navigate around the computer itself, everything seems to open just fine. Browsing files is not laggy. So the issue seems to mostly be with the browser usage. That is also when I notice the laptop to lock up completely.

I have Googled for solutions, which has led me to try getting rid of any spyware, viruses, cookies, temp files, I have even updated graphic card drivers, updated windows, changed my desktop theme to a more basic one.
I have even tried disabling hardware acceleration in YouTube.
I have even tried a handful of attempts to tweak windows 10 since many people had been complaining about it being the culprit to having a laggy/ slow computer. Nothing has changed the outcome. My browser continues to be slow, stuttering and lagging. The laptop has not been used since updating from windows 8 to 10 but I now need to be able to use the laptop so I must find a way to correct the problems.

As for internet service, I am connected by Ethernet cord and have speeds of 240Mbps down and 14 up.
When I do speed tests on this laptop, even tho I am connected via Ethernet and am sitting right by the modem, the laptop only shows speeds of 80Mbps down. While this should be plenty fast enough, I cant play any videos. Browser will not load pages.

About my PC:
It is an HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC
Windows 10 Home
Version 1511
OS Build 10586.633
AMD A6-440M APU with Radeon HD
RAM 4.00GB
64-bit Operating System

If anyone has had these same problems and have been able to fix them, please let me know your resolution.

Thank you in advance

after upgrading to win10, did you go to hp's website, search for your specific model, download and install the specific drivers for your laptop?

Honestly I cannot remember if I did back then. The "free upgrade" was easy, that is about all I can remember. I think the pc did updates shortly after that but I do not remember going to HP's website for anything extra.

Full model number: HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC 2220us

Side Note:
After reading your post I went to the manufacturer website for my laptop and put in all my information. I thought it wouldn't hurt to make sure I was up to date on all drivers. And I found this message lol.

"HP does not provide Windows 10 drivers on HP.com for HP computers sold prior to August 2013. Microsoft has made most of the component drivers for these products available via Device Manager once the product is running Windows 10 with an active Internet connection."

I opened Device Manager and I don't have any exclamation marks or anything else that would make me think the drivers were not up to date.

usually I would say not to upgrade

there is a good chance there will not be a solution other than going back to the original os. usually if the computer manufacturer do not provide upgrade drivers for laptops, there will be problems and I would normally advise not to upgrade.

a couple of things to try. try a different browser and try safemode with network to see if streaming is still slow.

I would love to be able to go to Windows 7. I have 7 on my desktop pc and there is no amount of money I could be given to change that.

I have tried other browsers. In fact all of them. I have not tried safe mode though. If the browser is not laggy while in safemode and I can play videos, what will that mean?

Thank you for your advice

means possible software issue

if there are no problems in safemode, it would mean most likely a third party utility or software was causing the problem.

What happens if you go back to the original Windows 7 or 8 from the recovery media or from the backup you made before upgrading to Windows 10? If it's fine then, keep it like it is.

Slow

Windows 8 itself had so many issues, I tried for hours to put Windows 7 on this laptop, the laptop wouldn't allow me to. My only choice was to swap one set of issues in Windows 8 to a whole new set of issues with Windows 10.

Looking back, I should have just sent the laptop back and bought another brand. This has been the biggest waste of money.

Hey, I have a similar model.

While it's another brand it was a SLUG of a laptop and never fun to use. Turns out that a big chunk of the lag was the HDD. We upgraded it to a SSD and now it boots from cold in about 30 seconds to the desktop. About 5 to 10 seconds to a browser loaded and the home page loaded.

AS-IS you won't like your laptop. Talk to folk about installing a SSD.

Yes you can play OS roulette all you want but there's a thing in there that is slow. I'd change that.
