HP iPAQ 6515 -

Feb 14, 2006 8:21PM PST

-after much research including posts on this site - I purchased the HP iPAQ 6515. I really love the little machine - however, in three weeks I have been locked out of it (a Simlock) for 24-48 hours every week - have had two different models - two different simcards - and the software that came with it assisted me in crashing my outlook 2003 program affecting my calendar and business contacts. Frustration is an understatement and looks like I will be exchanging it for a TREO. At this moment it is working o.k. but my warranty is about to run out (30 days) and I am afraid if I do not get rid of it while it is still within the warranty time period I will be stuck with an eventual nightmare. I wonder if any of you have experienced this? Spoke with someone yesterday that said this is not the first time they are getting folks locked out of using their phone due to some programming error from Hewlett Packard and the synchronization with the Cingular Simcard. you may want to return it and get the Uk release.the Uk release is unlocked running the 1.04 rom version that,s much more stable then the 1.12 rom in the cingular release.my 6515 uk version has been trouble free.I run it on T-mobile network with unlimeted internet for 20.00 a month.

thanks for your response. I went with Cingular because it is the family plan I was already a part of. (other fam members-phone service, etc..) That is why I am probably going to go with the Treo. Cingular's only other choice is the Blackberry and I am staying away from that due to info learned here at Cnet. Initially I wanted another piece of Hardware that is only serviced by Vorizon. I hope I don't end up having to switch phone companies too. Marcia

cingular sells the treo650 that,s not so hot if not wourse as far as device dependabilty compared to the 6515 you now own.you may want to hold off. if your stuck in cingular land ..hp is releasing the ipaq 6900 and cingular will be the only provider selling it in the us.the ipaq 6900 will run wm5 and also wifi.release is sometime in late april.Verizon has the treo 700 yet there are some Questions far as memory=the lack off.it,s a skippy device thus far.

thanks for your response again. Traded in the HP yesterday for the Treo and I hate it already. It hasn't caused any problems (yet), but I loved the ipaq and all it could do. Last night I looked up the Treo on cnet and was amazed by all of the trouble folks have had. At that time I seriously considdered returning the Treo - buying a simple phone (last one went swimming in the toilet) and waiting until Cingular contract is up in September. Your news about April is encouraging though. I wonder if HP will have made any improvements on either of the models? The other thing I am realizing is that it seems like all of these devices cause some headaches - and if a person is not willing to be patient and work through the issues they will find themselves using the pencil and paper method for everything. Do you think that is true?

there is some truth as far as HP leaving it,s customer in the dark on there PDA line.the resion why is lack of quality control/support base for the product they sell.I feel the hp6900 will have some issues because of the WM 5.0 os releases. There are pitfalls that the treo 700 has proved running WM 5.0 being lack of memory also speed.Best bet----if your stuck on the 6515 buy the uk model online.you will end up paying more yet you get the freedom of chioce when it comes to your gprs provider and getting a much more stable rom version in the 1.04.
I would skip the treo650.it,s a relic of the past.

I've had my 6515 for three weeks. I've had some problems that were a little difficult to resolve, mostly because it's so new that even tech support is in the dark. At Cingular, the salespeople are TOTALLY in the dark. They put me on the Blackberry plan. I didn't know any better so I was working diligently to try to make it work for about a week. The only thing that will work on the Blackberry plan is the BLACKBERRY! I had called Cingular multiple times and each tech had me change different settings. When I asked about the "Blackberry plan" the tech finally realized what had happened. After that was fixed, I've fallen in love with it. I've had to do a soft reset a couple of times, but did you think you were going to get a Microsoft product that didn't have some glitches? I've researched the GPS software and have pretty much decided on Navteq (currently I have a Garmin system that I love but Garmin doesn't make a program for the Ipaq 6515). That shall be my next challenge.

the gps gets alot of flack being weak on the 6515.Global locate released the 1.28 gps patch to better improve proformance and did a good job at it.only issue was that navteq did not choose the right port so it was connecting 4 out of 10 starts.global locate then pulled the update for those issues.tomtom works perfect with the 1.28 gps update giveing outstanding gps proformance.this made me dump my navteq for a while.tammidun if you intrested in the 1.28 you can find it in the http://mobilitytoday.com ipaq 6500 forums
