HP Flash/Thumb drive not recognized

Dec 30, 2009 2:12PM PST

I tried to reformat my 4gb Thumb / Flash USB2 drive stick on Windows XP.
Windows no longer recognizes the drive.
I get an acknowledgment beep when it is first inserted but it doesn't show under my computer. I can't seem to get it to work w/add hardware
I may have tried to reformat it to a different format at the time.

How can I remedy this or is it shot?

Try using HP's own formatting tool for USB drives. If it doesn't work then, suspect a bad drive. Have you tried it on another system? Also, if you have some sort of USB firewall protection, allow that drive/port to be active.

HP USB Drive

I've checked the HP website (which is awful).
Where might I find "Try using HP's own formatting tool for USB drives." ?

Any Help where to find it?

I did a quick google of the keywords, "HP format tool" came up with this link:
hp-usb-disk-storage-format-tool.software.informer.com -OR try-
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,64963-order,4-c,peripherals/description.html

There maybe various versions out there, but I recall HP does have it, use their search engine for a quick link as well. But, usually use it at it defaults once you get it. Also,be sure you address the proper device!
