Question

HP F4580 PRINTER EMERGENCY

May 9, 2011 6:21PM PDT

I have this printer, not old, little used. I am sure it's in working order. I keep it in my pied-a-terre I'm visiting now. The things y9ou don't use very often like that, you forget their wrinkles.

It used to work.
You think it's still in working order.
But it doesn't work.
So it isn't in working order.

Time to find the user manual and do the diagnostics it recommends. Then try it on another PC just in case it's a Windows issue on the netbook.

The first thing to do, reload the software. It sounds as if you may be using a netbook, you did not mention the OS you are using. How did you load the software originally? You can go to Hewlett Packard's website under drivers and support, cite the model number and operating system and download the software from there. What you have described sounds much like a software issue.

Thanks all, Profitt's suggestions particularly I hope to try when I am back near the machine next week. I am not there at the moment and was in a hurry at the time. One now becomes dependent on these things as air tickets etc. need a printout.

Looking back, I recall I started a previous thread about this printer which I previously had more or less trouble with. Because I couldn't put software onto my netbook. Then it was very difficult to download the program, others said it was too, I don't think I achieved it. Was also told don't need it, and in fact I was at some point able to print and scan without it AFAIR. Now that I would have the possibility from the original disk via another computer I can't find where I put that disk aaaargh! Must get self organised and one should asways do these things while they are fresh and recent.

HP's software is a little tough (or brittle?) I'm finding that protection software (Norton, TeaTimer, others) and FIREWALLS can break much of HP's printer software. I am unsure if they can fix that.
