You were smart to back up your data. Things like this happen unfortunately. I'd take it to a shop for repairs or just buy a new laptop. Repair shops are expensive. One I frequent charges $70 just to take it and tell you what's wrong, so it could easily cost you a couple hundred bucks. If you're lucky, it could just be the hard drive, but if it's the motherboard, the cost could be more than the laptop is worth.
Not sure as to the exact specs of my laptop other than what's on the unit itself, but i had a major issue last night and want to see if there's a quick fix, or if its what i think it is which is fried. My wife bought this laptop for me for Christmas 2012. I wanted a laptop to mix music/videos and store a lot of data. I can't find the user manual so all i can tell you is it has HP envy dv6. I'm not a computer guru so please avoid condescending comments. I will bet I've used this laptop less than a total of 20 hours. Recently i had issues of the computer starting up, but my info was not there. Basically had a screen similar to that when it was new. After a few shutdown/restart attempts it started working correctly. Not long after this my mouse froze causing another restart. It worked fine the past few weeks, but last night while on the internet i heard a sound i can only describe as a sudden "chirp" to the left of the keyboard where the exhaust vents are and it completely shut off. No power. Nothing. I removed/reinstalled the battery to no avail. I plugged in the power cord with the battery removed. Still nothing. I've always used a solid surface when using it so the likelihood it overheated due to improper use is nil. I did lose the factory power cord a few months ago and bought a universal, multi connecter type charger and it seemed to work fine. That's the only thing i can think of that could possibly have been an issue. I recently saved my data to a 2TB hard drive (thank God) so my info can be restored, but i need to know if anyone has experienced this type of issue and what is the normal warranty period for hp laptops. I've heard of crashing, but never experienced it. Any help will be appreciated. I'm still looking for user manual and will give specs as soon as i can. If it even matters. I think i have a major issue that isn't the "norm".
