HP DVD+R

Double Layer (8.5 GB) disc's suck.

I was creating a set of restore disc's and out of 6 disc's , 5 were coasters. That's using a brand new burner too.

Ouch. OK, I don't use DL for restore discs.
Jan 12, 2014 1:58AM PST

Can't recall why but years ago it didn't work so back to singles and didn't look back. I need reliable and stuff that doesn't waste my time and money.

Sorry if that sounds short but the industry burns me up at times.

2nd idea...

The Asus DVD specs offer that 12x is the default burn speed for DL. In Imgburn you can set the burn speed not for 12X but lower if you want to try again. Just be sure its set before you start making backups otherwise it will use "MAX" setting for default.

I have had luck with making other than restore DVDs with DL.

They are good for other things. The issue of "layer break" appears solved in modern recording apps but what the makers use to make restore media seems to be older.

Passing thought

Are you saying that out of 6 discs used only 1 made it as a readable backup? -OR- you needed to use 6 disc backups and one happened to work? Anyways, I found DL as well to be a PITA and simply don't use it and so far SL is OK and has always worked. Since, you posted HP *DVD+R* that is the preferred disc type +R to use unless the burner is ONLY -R rated. Win8 needed 6 discs for a backup and this was new PC? That seems rather steep in discs, maybe I missed something here or that win8 system is laden.

Yeah. only 1 disc burned and Windows said " Backup Complete" . The others started to burn but Windows found errors on the disc's and rejected them as unusable .

The 1 disk that did burn, when tested it , Windows popup said medium unusable.

6 out of 6 coasters ?

I'm trying to make Imgburn default again to see if I have better luck.

By default, it should media player as the windoze burning pgm. I would suppose if this is selectable then try Imgburn to be the new default. Below, I found some basic burning info for win8:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/burn-cd-or-dvd-media-player

I make more headway in win8 only because I stumble and then find the right answers. In this I just never used DL discs for that task. Heck, that's me and I only have SL in the work bag anyways.

ImgBurn can be default for everything but creating restore media. I even tuned off WMP and Windows still defaulted there. Stubborn a hell.

Ok, don't laugh but...
Jan 13, 2014 12:59AM PST

what is a restore disc as compare to a data or video disc (I really have never done one). But I think maybe "layer break" maybe the issue because I just can't believe HP discs are that bad. Don't try to max. out the disc's capacity. Try a couple at 7.2G/7.5G to see if you get more success.

Well
Jan 13, 2014 1:09AM PST

I would try that IF Windows gave me that option.

Windows 8.1 won't let ImgBurn be the default for backup and restore media.
I have copies on on SL disc's though so that's ok.
I just wanted a backup on disc's as well as an external HDD

I always felt if I built something or purchase something, I Should Control It.
Not It Control Me.

That's what's tickin' me off here.

can't you single burn them too?
Jan 12, 2014 4:58PM PST

Just do half as much and have them read like a single layer?

hehe

actually I did single layer disc's and they burned fine with Windows burner.

Trying to get Imgburn to be default.

Jan 14, 2014 4:02AM PST

I Had to use the Windows program.

I'm playing with CDBurnerXP now.

it's ok though , I have the image on a 1 TB passport ext. HDD

Having a DVD disc image just puts me in my comfort zone, even though I have the installation disc.
