The upper versions of Vista do offer a software raid so no prerequisite is needed to achieve raid. But and this is the crux of the matter, where are you going to find support for this? They don't supply a full version of Vista so your options are limited and expensive. That is, to get the software raid you'll be purchasing the full version of Vista that has that and then discover there are few people that will support it without asking for the credit card number.
If this must be done, I'd cancel the order and start over.
I just ordered one of these from hp and at the time hp sales told me this supported raid 0 and raid 1. Since then I have been reading some things to the contrary. I looked up the spec for the ICH8M Intel chipset that is on this notebook and was not 100% clear if it did or not, however It did say the ICH8M-E chipset does support raid. I called hp technical support and they told me you can not set it up in the BIOS but you can do it through Vista installation, and it will be software raid. BTW the guy at HP didnt really seem to know what he was talking about.
Can someone enlighten me on this please? I am getting ready to refuse this shipment and look for something else.
Here are the specs for the hp 9700t:
Vista premium - 3 GB Ram - Intel 9300 2.5 - ghz Intel ICH8M chipset - 120GB hard drive 7200rpm (times 2)
I would also like to know if there is a difference in these intel ICH8 chipsets are some actually hardware raid or are they all software?
