HP dv6165cl hangs when the screen is moved

May 11, 2009 8:11AM PDT

AMD Turion 64 x2
2GB ram
250GB hdd
Windows XP MCE

I bought this system used and it is in excellent shape, but it has a repeatable hanging issue. It does this even on the BIOS screen with no hard drive, no battery, only one stick of memory in all possible configurations (suffice to say I've narrowed it down to none of the usual suspects). I can make it freeze repeatably simply by closing the screen (not the whole way)... at about the halfway point, more times than not, the system will simply hang (on the main BIOS screen, the clock seconds stop moving). If Windows is loaded, the cursor freezes, keyboard freezes (no caps lock light, etc) and a reboot is necessary.

It is out of warranty. I've already opened it up and reinforced the back of the motherboard over various chips to tighten their connections, but no luck there.

It has to be a loose connection somewhere where the screen meets the body. I've had the screen off, but couldn't see anything that looked wrong.

Has anyone ever run into this? I could subject it to a life of desktop use only, but I'd really like to be able to take this on the road reliably. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

Frankly?

See how much a replacement motherboard is.

And PS...

The dv6xxx and 9xxx systems do have a high enough incident rate that I know what it is. I see HP change the board for this and the other issue. In warranty is the cheap fix.

New mobo only option?
May 11, 2009 8:42AM PDT

I've found replacement motherboards for about $100, and I can get it installed for under $200 (I'm comfortable in a desktop, but am new to laptops, so I'll have to pay labor).

Frankly, I only paid $400 for it and I'd rather put any money into something that will have a warranty at some point. I can just relegate this to desk duty if need be, but I was just hoping there was something screen-related I might check out that could sustain its mobile life.

I should also state

That it is out of warranty, obviously.

It's a known issue.

And beware ebay boards. It's too likely it's just another bad board.

As to warranty, this model is best kept in warranty or avoided if used.
